Making: Yummy Homemade Pizza!

27 September 2010 | Posted in: Food & Health | 6 Comments

I’ve tried and tested this recipe a few times, and I’m TOTALLY LOVING IT!

Simple ingredients. Yummy results!

I mean, really, if a beginner like me can make this pizza, ANYONE can too!

[Thanks to Jamie Oliver for this fantastic basic dough recipe!]

You really should give it a try!

Here’s the recipe!

Basic Dough Recipe

Ingredients

30g fresh yeast or 3x7g sachets dried yeast (I went with dried yeast)

30g honey or sugar (I went with fine grain sugar)

625ml tepid water (ie. moderately warm)

1kg bread flour

30g salt

some extra flour for dusting (I used plain flour)

1. Dissolve yeast, honey/sugar in HALF the tepid water.

2. In a big bowl, mix the flour and salt. Make a well in the centre, and pour in all the dissolved yeast mixture. Make circular movements from the centre, moving outwards, slowly bringing in more and more of the flour until all the yeast mixture is soaked up.

3. Pour the other half of the tepid water into the centre, and do the same circular movement until you mix it all up and create a moist dough.

4. Knead!

Sprinkle some plain flour on a clean table and basically just roll, push, fold the dough over and over for 5 minutes. If any of the dough sticks to your hands, just rub them together with an extra flour.

Btw, kids would LOVE to get involved here! Give them a bit of the dough and let them do some kneading together too!

5. Flour both hands well, and lightly flour the top of the dough. Make it into a roundish shape and place it on a baking tray (As for me, I put this big ball of dough back into the big bowl).

6. Leave the dough to prove until it’s doubled in size. Ideally, leave the bowl in a warm place, eg. near a warm cooker (I covered my bowl with a clean kitchen towel and left it for 1 hour near my warm water kettle). You can cover the bowl with clingfilm to speed things up.

7. When the dough has doubled in size, knock the air out by bashing it around for a minute.

8. Divide the dough into 4 pieces (this recipe makes 4 relatively big pizza bases).

9. Roll the dough, using a rolling pin, into a large, plate-sized shape, about 0.5cm thick

(If you love ‘deep pan pizzas’ like me, I have it slightly thicker, about 0.6cm – 0.7cm thick. Then I use my palms to roughly flatten the middle of the pizza base so that the sides end up thicker than the middle)

10.
Add your chosen topping!

Now this is so much fun because I get to sprinkle GENEROUS amount of toppings on our own homemade pizza!

I sprinkle a bit of olive oil on the baking tray first. Then, I place the pizza base on the tray. I’d then smear a bit of olive oil and tomato paste all over the middle part of the pizza before adding on the rest of the toppings and scattering chopped mozzarella cheese on top.

Some of the toppings we’ve used:
Onions, ham, basil leaves, red pepper, mushroom, prawns, olives, rosemary leaves, and pineapple.

We’ve used different combinations and created yummy pizzas!

(I love Hawaiian pizzas, so I’ve made a pizza with LOTS of ham, pineapple bits and mozzarella cheese. Aaaahhh, yummmm!)

11. Preheat the oven and bake for around 7-10 mins at 240 deg Celsius until the topping has melted and the pizza base is lightly golden.

Really!

After trying out this dough recipe and actually made homemade pizzas myself, I’m hooked!

Have fun making some of your own! (and I’d love to hear how it turns out!)

Enjoy!

Sunday’s Food for Thought : Being Grateful about Life

26 September 2010 | Posted in: Inspirational | No Comment

Are we grateful about life?

Whether we like it or not, the reality is, it’ll be hard for anyone to be thankful or grateful about anything if we don’t know / acknowledge that there is a Source from which we receive what we currently have.

For example: we will be thankful for the ‘free’ oxygen we breath in every day, when we realise that God is the Source who gives us this thing called ‘oxygen’ that we need every day, without us ‘asking’ or ‘paying’ for it.

[Someone who needs to pay for oxygen tanks in order to live and breathe every day will undeniably appreciate the ‘cost-free’ oxygen we all enjoy daily]

God is the Creator, and God is also the REDEEMER.

When we believe that we have been REDEEMED, we’ll surely live a life that’s full of thankfulness.

We will be able to see how God works in our life.

For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.
To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
– Romans 11:36

Children are like Wet Cement

24 September 2010 | Posted in: Inspirational, Parenting | 2 Comments

Children are like wet cement.

There’s precious LITTLE TIME when we can create a lasting imprint and mold them into responsible, loving people.

What we do in that LITTLE TIME shapes them for the rest of their lives.

Yes, our ‘job’ as a parent IS important.

We do make a difference.

And it’s an honourable task too.

If you often find your parenting journey tough, I hope this little reminder keeps you going.

[I know I need such reminders from time to time]

Have a great weekend, everyone!

The first few lines above are inspired by Dr Kevin Leman’s book ‘ Making Children Mind without Losing Yours’. And btw, please join me on the Our Everyday Things Facebook Page, if you haven’t already done so yeah.

Getting the much-needed Clear Vision

24 September 2010 | Posted in: Advertorial | 2 Comments

Yes. This is how my glasses’ left lens look like.

Badly scratched. Right in the middle. Uncomfortably ‘blocking’ my vision. Every day for the past one year.

It’s irritating actually, but I had to get used to it since I didn’t plan to get a new pair of frames.

So you can only imagine how happy I was when Essilor Singapore came to me and offered to sponsor their latest Crizal lenses so that I get to experience the much-needed clear vision we all should have.

(read: Lenses that are not prone to scratches, smudges, water, reflections and dust!)

And I was like, ‘Oh, THAT’s just so timely! I BADLY NEED a new pair of glasses and lenses!’

Now, this is the happy me and my new pair of Crizal lenses. Hehe.

LOVE them!

I especially love the fact that I can see everything SO much clearly now!

Yes, WITHOUT the scratches right in front of my eyeball and all! (Thanks to Essilor Singapore!)

Anyway.

Click HERE to read about my old lenses and my new Crizal lenses on my Facebook.

I shared more photos, stories and product info there!

You know, I only realise the importance of having good quality lenses recently! I used to always pay more attention to getting good frames than choosing good lenses.

And now I’m curious.

Do YOU pay more attention to frames than to lenses, like I used to?

Do you actually ask for a particular brand of lenses when you go to an Optics Shop?

Kite Festival Singapore 2010 & Light Trails

This year’s kite-flying event was held over the weekend (18-19 September) at ‘The Promontory @ Marina Bay’ (near Raffles Place MRT).

We wanted to be there at 5pm last saturday, BUT in the end, we got there at around 7pm!

Oh well.

At least we all managed to see a few kites still flying up in the sky.

[Photos above : I wound down our friend’s car window and quickly took those shots, ie. while we were stuck in slow traffic!]

We tried to fly a kite too, but with not much wind at the time and crowds still walking about around us, it was difficult.

So in the end, after watching a few performances, both Anya and Vai, and their other friends, had a nice time running around the area.

Here are two of my favourite running shots.

Oh btw, if you’d like to experiment on getting shots like the above, I wrote about how to do it some 2.5 years ago.

Have fun experimenting!
