Making : Newspaper Castle
We made this the other day. Newspaper castles. One for each kid.
And surprisingly, it’s quite simple to make.
What you’d need:
– Newspaper
– Water colour and brush (we used toothbrushes too)
– Crayons, scissors and glue
– White-coloured paper carton (or in our case, we used 1cm styrofoam boards as the base)
What you do:
– Get the kids to watercolour the newspaper sheet – about a size of an A4 paper, one colour per sheet
– Once done, put it aside, let it dry and continue to your next preferred colour
– Cut out triangular and rectangular shapes using the different-coloured newspaper [As I cut, I emphasised what these shapes are called to Vai, to help him learn and remember]
– Kids glued the rectangles and triangles onto the base, making ‘castle-looking’ structures
[Vai didn’t finish the glueing part because he WANTED to play with the liquid glue instead. When I didn’t allow it, he got cranky and Anya offered to stick the ‘castles’ for him!]
– Once the kids are happy with their castles, put the board aside and let the glue bits fully dry
– Once dry, the kids can outline the shapes with dark-coloured crayons and draw windows, doors and stuff!
And that’s it!
We all loved their artwork!

Now about the stuff we make, I have a wall at home where we display all sorts of stuff that the kids make: drawings, crafts that can be stuck / hung on that wall, anything.
I almost always take a photo of the stuff our kids make (sometimes I just once in a while take a photo of that ‘wall’, so that it includes ‘everything’, instead of taking separate shots for each one! 🙂
But no, I don’t keep them ‘forever’ though. Our home is tiny 🙂 And I can’t imagine the space we need to keep the stuff we make so often.
I do keep/display the works for ‘some time’ though.
After a month or two (or three), I’d take them off, and either recycle them or throw them out (I always do this when the kids are not around because I never want them to ‘see’ their works being put ‘into the bin’)
Anya ever asked about her works and I explained why we can’t keep them ‘forever’.
I’d avoid saying ‘throw away’ so that she doesn’t feel that I don’t appreciate her works. And I’d focus (read: emphasise) on how I love making stuff together with her, and how we’d be making more stuff together. She’s been okay so far with this approach.
Other than that, I do have a little box though to keep those ‘really really treasured’ works that I know I’d like to keep because they’re really special.
PS: I look Vai these days, and I often feel how he’s such a ‘big boy’ too! And, as much as I’m happy that my kids are no longer little babies, I still miss them being ‘small’. Sigh. Such conflicting thoughts of parents!

ok, leonny, i need to ask this ….. where do you keep all your kids’ artwork and craft? my 4.5 yo wants to keep every single thing he has made, but we just don’t have room for everything! tell me what you do and what works for your family. i’ve heard of ideas like photographing the work, then recyling it.
also, i love the picture of vai and his castle. for some reason, he looks like such a big boy there. maybe the side parting of his hair and the big boy grin is why. very cute.
