Why ‘Jurassic World’ the Movie is Not (Yet) for Our Kids

13 July 20157 Comments

We’ve spotted many dinosaurs this school holiday!

Not just in Singapore, but also in Jakarta.

Well, I guess, the ‘dino’ theme naturally coincides with the release of ‘Jurassic World’ the movie?

Now.

About ‘Jurassic World’ the movie, here’s one question I get from a few friends : Have you and your kids watch the movie yet?

Well, while I know of many families who bring their little ones to watch it in cinemas, we choose to NOT bring our kids to watch it in a cinema.

Errr … why not, some may wonder.

Here’re some of our reasons:

as I often say to the kids, we won’t miss much from not watching a movie or two– The movie was obviously made to evoke a sense of suspense. The background music, sound effects, cinematography (well, everything) are meant to give the audience that super intense feeling from being chased by huge dinosaurs, etc.

I mean, if the movie had not made you feel scared nor ‘at the edge of your seat’, then the movie would’ve been considered as … a ‘failed project’, no?

Now back to the question:

would I let my three children sit in a dark studio, in front of a super large screen, and experience this kind of overwhelming intensity?

The answer is a clear ‘No thank you’.

(Would I let my two older kids watch the movie in a cinema? The answer is still no. Not yet.)

– Having said that though, we will wait for the DVD and let the children watch it at home, together with us.

Why wait for the DVD?

Because we can then watch it on a much smaller screen (ie. Less impactful), and most importantly, we have the option of lowering the volume during scary scenes, or even skipping some scenes altogether.

(We’d watch the movie first, as this way, we’d know which scenes are better skipped / ‘censored’)

– The movie rating is 13+.

I’m sure there’s a good reason why it’s deemed not ‘suitable’ for children below 13yo (which btw are the ages of my three kids)

So there you go.

That’s our stand on whether our kids would watch ‘Jurassic World’ the movie in cinemas or not.

ie. Not all movies are suitable for children.

And ultimately, it’s the parents who need to decide on what’s necessary and good for the children.

Anyway.

As I often say to the kids, we won’t miss much from not watching a movie or two.

(It’s hard to find must-not-miss, suitable-for-kids movies, those with truly great stories, these days!)

What say you?

    Hi Leony, you know what?
Recent gathering with my sister in-law (from S’pore, with 3 chidlren. The youngest son is 5yo, which same as my son), she keep asking my son: Do you like/watch Jurassic Park?
(I can be as shock as you…!!!)

Well, my son and daughter always on Disney channel, thus thank God that he doesn’t know about Jurassic Park.

Few years back when her son was around 1, 2 yo. He watched Jurassic Park (should be episode 1) on iPad whenever he is eating. The maid will swipe to (his favorite part) where tyrannosaurus destroy the building and eat the man that sitting on the toilet bowl. And with iPad, the scene could be play again and again.

So, when she asking about Jurassic Park to my son, may be thinking that boy likes this kind of movie. And also the recent Jurassic World of whether we watch it or not. They could already downloaded and watch again and again. This is what I can think off.

Well, yes, with my son 5yo and now he can understand the storyline, I don’t think Jurassic World suitable for him. Those movies that can raise the emotion of anger, fear, hatred, for example Avatar, I don’t encourage children to watch. Those movie that promote feeling of love (with family), caring, help on each other, these are what my wife and I encourage.

So, with recent movie at the cinema, we rated Minions not suitable for children, more for big adult and Inside out, more suitable for children.

      Thanks for sharing …

Yes, the thing with ‘animated movies’, … it doesn’t mean all are suitable for young children.

To me, Avatar would be fine for my 9yo and 11yo to watch at home, BUT I still am not okay with the scene where they sat on each other and ‘mated’. So till now they haven’t watched the movie too.

One movie that we watched recently as a family was ‘the Gifted Hands’. This is a good one for the family! Based on true story (kids as young as Brie won’t be able to understand the movie just yet, but it is safe enough for them to be around when the movie is played on TV =)

Dear Leonny, it’s been a long time since I left a comment but I am still following your blog. 🙂 Just had to post a comment to affirm your stand because it resonates with hubby and me too. 🙂

  • Fiona says:

Thank you for sharing this 🙂 Agree with you. Anyway, my husband and I have agreed to not bring our kids (under 6yo) to watch a movie in a cinema, even for children’s movie. We also prefer to watch movie at home together.
