Thoughts : Full in the Heads, Empty in the Hearts?

5 November 20142 Comments

Here’s the reality.

Parents tend to worry about their children’s intellectual developments.

Why can’t my child read yet?
(And she’s 3yo, btw)

Oh, my friend’s son knows his ABC’s already. My daughter doesn’t even know what ‘A’ is like.

My friend’s daughter reads so well at the age of 5. My 6yo daughter can’t read properly.

I’ve personally seen young teenagers who score straight A’s at school, who speak oh-so-rudely to uncles and aunties at food courts. We parents compare.

We parents worry.

We parents … place great emphasis on our children’s intellectuality and academic abilities.

Not that it’s wrong of course.

Because it sure is our responsibility as parents to provide an environment where our children can learn and play.

So, what’s my point?

Well. Today’s food for thought that I’d like to share is this:

While we sure put a lot of emphasis on our children’s intellectuality and academic developments, how much emphasis do we place on ‘seemingly less popular’ aspects in our children’s lives, like : honesty, respect towards others, good manners, faith, integrity, etc?

I’ve personally seen young teenagers who score straight A’s at school, who speak oh-so-rudely to uncles and aunties at food courts.

Or, young children who do very well at school, but simply like to … not tell the truth.

To me personally, … ABC’s, maths and science can always be learned from school.

But, values like good mannerism, positive attitude towards failure, respect towards others, honesty, faith, etc…these need to be instilled and built since day 1.

By the FAMILY.

Otherwise, I am afraid we are all raising a generation that is full in the head, yet empty in the hearts.
