Babies : Mistaken Gender Guesses
[Our 5-month-old Brie, wearing a headband to look very obviously girlish =) ]
While we know every baby is uniquely created, I guess most of us will agree too that it’s sometimes difficult to tell for sure the gender of a baby that you happen to see.
A baby may look like a boy, but oops, apparently it’s a baby girl!
=)
I get this a LOT.
In fact, it happened so often that I was so used to smiling and replying, ‘Oh, she’s a girl’.
Without feeling offended whatsoever, I mean =)
…
I got this ‘mistaken gender guesses’ frequently when I had Anya, and also now that I have Brie with me.
‘Your baby boy, ah?’
‘Oh look! Baby! Baby! A boy, is it?’
‘Oh! Baby boy or baby girl?’ *and Brie was wearing a pink romper and pink socks at the time*
=)
I guess it’s basically because babies generally look the ‘same’?
Short hair. No hair. Neutral coloured clothes. Neutral coloured prams?
Anyway, I wonder if you also have had this kind of experience before.
Ever got mistaken gender guesses by strangers? Hope to hear your stories!

Same here! My baby girl is already wearing PINK romper, PINK socks, PINK blanket, PINK mittens and people still ask “Boy ah?” *Faint*

Leon,
Like you, i dressed Caitlin in pink. People still ask Girl or Boy. Perharps they are used to ask the question w/o thinking much;)
I think so too … They probably ask THEN notice ‘hey, this baby is in all pink …’ =)
Never mind la.. It’s not easy to guess 🙂
=) Someone shared, to be on the ‘more polite’ side, ask for baby’s name first and try to figure out the gender after that =)
Toby was ( sometimes still is) mistaken as a girl :p
Aunties at the market calling him ‘mei mei’ hahaha. Maybe coz his hair is curly and we keep it long :D.
Although his behaviour very boyish and wearing very boyish outfit…
ah my pretty boy!! love him so much
And, lots of Korean boys are also very ‘pretty looking’ =)
It’s a compliment from the aunties =)
When Chloe was up to 2 years old, people do tend to ask if she was a boy or girl. If they knew the name first, they would never asked but I am pretty sure most of them thought she was a boy before knowing the name. Surprisingly like your experience, Chloe was wearing girlish pink colors and dress, and the first thing that you hear, is.. “Is it a boy?” Ooops, its a girl.
Differentiating a boy or girl at an early age is difficult but it can sometimes be common sense to see what clothes(eg. princess shirt/dress) or accessories they might have on or even what’s on the pram, say a “pink blanket”. If none of this is visible,
A word of advice to anyone, “Observe first, not speculate” :p
Or as I would do if I am not sure, “Awww what a cute baby” “What name would this beautiful baby have?” :p Sometimes, it is corny but I rather not offend the parents by saying the wrong gender. :p
=) “observe first, not speculate” >> great tip! =)
