Mothers and the Everydayness of Life

9 May 20108 Comments

[Drawing by Anya]

As I sit and think about mothers today, one of the first things that comes to mind is the everydayness of life that mothers face. Day in, day out.

The dishes piling in the sink.
The clean laundry pile waiting to be ironed.
A toddler belting out a scream (yes, the one that neighbours are probably quite familiar with!).
The meals to be prepared.
The crumbs under the table waiting to be swept clean.
The never-ending questions of a preschooler.
The spills waiting to be wiped.

The truth is, these things are the stuff of our daily life, aren’t they?

The ‘job’ of a mother.

Often, we grow tired and exhausted too.

Recently, I’m reminded of God’s Word and how we should be thankful to HIM for this phase of life.

The phase where the children – whom HE has entrusted in our lives – are growing up.

The phase where we have to still wipe their noses, hear their cries and wash their many little dirty clothes.

I’m again reminded how being a mother is indeed a privilege.

A privilege many women would LOVE to have, but don’t.

Someone once said, ‘If you’re a parent … the days are long, but the years are short’.

And that is SO right.

One day we’ll look into the kids’ bedrooms and see empty beds.

The cries and laughters we now hear everyday will be replaced with silence.

The laundry basket will one day contain only your clothes and your spouse’s.

Going through the everydayness of life and its daily challenges can indeed be draining.

BUT.

When we look beyond today and see the special role, task and responsibility we have been given by God as mothers whose lives greatly influence these little ones, we’ll sure find the joy and extra strength from Him too.

I am SO thankful to God for reminding me of all these things, and how His grace will always be sufficient for us who put our trust and hope in Him.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Preparing Nicole for her mid year exams sometimes stressed me up so much, that I have forgotten how delightful it used to be teaching her the small stuff as she was growing up. I am beginning to miss those moments already

    Thanks for the timely reminder

Just today, i was complaining about how tiring it is to bathe the kids, brush their teeth, prepare their milk and getting them ready for bed especially after going out for a long day.

Your post somehow waken me up! That i better do treasure these little task i am given for now before they growing up, not needing me anymore.

Terrific post on a topic very close to my heart. I love being a mom and I know you do too. Some days are definitely challenging but I cannot think of a more worthwhile vocation. Happy Mother’s Day, my friend!

Happy Mother’s Day, Leonny! You sure are a great one, seems like an octopus to me at times – juggling work and STILL doing lots of stuff with your two kids!

I totally understand the prelude part of your writing – those number of chores queuing up for you to complete them one by one…it’s comforting to know many moms out there are like me too, busy busy busy…never seem to end!!

However, this is life, these are MOMENTS! We are so damn lucky to be worrying ONLY chores and not whether we will have any food on the table tonight or when will we ever get a roof over our heads.

Mundane our chores might be, it means we we have ONLY little things to fuss over. I always remind myself this when chores get overwhelming. And who says we have to compete them at a specific time? We are our own boss anyway!

    Take a break on Mother’s Day ๐Ÿ˜€

i pray daily that God gives me the wisdom & strength & love to do the job He has given to me & i thank God that He gave me wonderful parents who are great models for me ๐Ÿ˜€
