Making: Felt Hairclips
This was what I made some two weeks ago, and finally, I managed to write a post about it.
Anya’s very own felt hairclips!
Simple and relatively fast to make (I really enjoyed making them!), and here’s how YOU can make some yourselves too!
…
What you’ll need:
– Metal clips (see picture above)
(I’d personally suggest choosing bigger metal clips so the ‘clip’ is firmer)
– Felt (contracting colours are better)
– Needle and thread, and scissors
– Super glue
What you do:
1. Decide on what you want to make, eg. a flower or a two-three layered heart shape should be good for a start
2. Cut out your felt (I roughly drew on the felt using a pencil before cutting them out)
3. Use a thread colour that’s different from the felt so that the hand-stitches are nicely visible
[eg. The stitches can be made to look like ‘fish scales’ too. The possibility is endless!]
4. Once you’re done stitching the felt, it’s time to cover the clip with felt.
5. To cover the ‘back of clip’, cut out some felt (exact shape of the clip, see above picture), and slide the clip’s back into the slit. Use super glue to stick the felt onto the metal clip.
6. I cut out more felt, and covered the ‘front’ of the clip using super glue.
7. You can either sew the flower you’ve sewn onto the clip OR use super glue. I did both *smile*
And that’s it!
Your very own personalised, cute (and affordable) felt hairclips!
Which are great as gifts too!
[Btw, you don’t have to be familiar with sewing to do projects like this, because I myself have never had any interest in needles and thread, until just recently, ie. I’m a complete beginner who can’t even sew or cut a straight line properly, haha]
Now I need to look for some red and black felt as Vai wants a felt Lightning McQueen ‘brooch’ of some kind for his bag! Hehe.

Thanks for leaving a comment! Visited your site … Beautiful clips!! ๐
What a great tutorial! This would be a fun craft project for all. I had fun stopping by and checking out your craftiness! Thank you!
Ya Leonny, definitely More authentic. Thanks for the clarification.
Hanny:
Gimana han? udah jadi belon batik hair clipnya ? hehe …
Jia you!
Sherlyn:
It looks much nicer when the thread is in a different colour though.. Makes it look more authentic and ‘hand-made’, I guess ? ๐
As for the super glue, as long as you apply a really thin layer, it gels well with the felt (if there’s too much glue, it ‘seeps’ through the felt)

Hi hi .. ๐
I’m a total beginner too when it comes sewing. Can’t even sew a straight line hehe. So, if I can make these, you sure can too! ๐
Wah after baking you now venture into making hairclips! Hey, start an online store lah! ๐

Gua kemaren ini baru kepikir mau bikin hair clip buat Aileen, tapi dari batik…lucu kan buat di match sama baju batiknya. Tapi cuma niat doang, belom terlaksana. ha..ha..ha…keburu Aileen nya gede deh ๐
Maybe they could make some and I buy from them.. Hehehe ๐
So pro. So nicely done. If I do it, I will choose matching color thread to felt, cos I want to hide the stitches. LOL.
Btw, won’t superglue has any chemical reaction to the coated hair clip?
i am totally hopeless at stitching but this looks *hopefully* doable for me. i’ll try it. it’s so pretty & cute! =)
