Vai: First Day at Nursery School
When Anya first started her nursery school, Vai was 16 months old and we both sent Anya to school (every school day for one whole year).
Yesterday, Anya (who’ll start school this Thursday) and I sent Vai to school.
Anya’s first few days at nursery school was rather … traumatic. She’s okay if I was around, but by the third day she went hysterical when I had to leave her with the teachers. It was totally heart-breaking! (read more about it HERE and what we did to make her feel less anxious about school)
This time I went a little more prepared if somehow my second kid didn’t like the idea of school too or something.
We reached the school 15 minutes early, went to the ‘waiting room’ (where all kids gathered before going off to their respective classes).
And.
Vai refused to let go off my hands, and kept on telling me how he’s really tired and wanted to sleep!
He freaked out and gave me a super sad face when they all had to line up and walk to class.
Basically, throughout the 1.5 hours he’s there yesterday, he’s okay if I was like, no more than 5m away from him *smile*
[It’ll be back to the usual 3-hour session starting this Thursday, where all Kindergarten students start school too, including Anya]
I’ve heard of other friends’ kids who, on their very first day of school, calmly waved good-bye to their parents, independently walked into class and settled down well.
Not quite the case for my two kids’ first few days of school apparently, haha.
Ah anyway. I’d love to see how Vai settles down in the end.
And how he grows to love the idea of school.
Because I know he will, just like how Anya felt totally okay with school after those first few ‘unhappy’ weeks at nursery school.

Thanks so much for sharing. I guess different kids respond differently on their first days of school ya … Glad that Dylan took it well even on the first day 🙂 As for Vai, by the 4th day, there’re no tears when he had to say good bye … And he now is totally okay with the idea of going to school 🙂

Vai udah familiar sama sekolahannya, tp belum familiar di tinggal pegi aja kali ya. Tp by 4th day dia udah ok, …. jauh lebih cepet adaptasinya dibanding Anya dulu (yg by 4th day masih bisa nangis abis2an). JL gua rasa sih akan adapt well with school, judging from her character 🙂 Ntar gua tinggal liat update foto2nya dari FB lu deh 🙂

iya tuh … berasa lagi masa2 waktu dulu Anya masuk sekolah pertama kali. Tp Vai jauh lebih cepet adaptasinya dibanding Anya. Hari ke 4 sekolah, Vai udah ok. Waktu dulu Anya, wah dia bisa nangis ga berenti for 15mins though udah hari ke 5. Anak pertama and anak kedua sih ya kali .. (ie. at least Vai udah familiar with the school krn anter jemput encinya …)

Thanks. By the fourth day, he was totally okay and happy to walk into the school’s waiting room. I just hope that the school lets these little nursery children learn through play too, and not only focused too much on worksheets

Thanks for sharing about Ethan … Ya, I guess every child has his/her own pace when it comes to handling change. So far I do notice how Vai is taking it better compared to Anya the last time she started nursery. And I guess it’s because Vai is already familiar with the school by the time he started nursery, while it was totally a new place for Anya 2 years ago.

ya … I can only imagine how it must’ve felt like she’s being left to survive in a foreign place away from the family she knows so well … Hope she’s feeling better about everything real soon …

Mine cried once during the 1st 2 days of his pre-nursery, not those big cries but tears that quietly flow down his cheek. sat at a corner byhis own and chose not to mix around with other kids. It took him 1 week for settle in completely and since then he LOVES going to school. =)
Dylan started his nursery on tues and did great on his 1st day. he waved to me and checked where I am from time to time. Everything went on smoothly and I decided there’s no need for me to be there on the 2nd day.
I beleieve Vai will too loves going to school. The idea of being away from mommy in a new environment will sink in soon.
vai juga spt anya dulu yah? gw kira vai should be okay, mengingat karakternya yg lbh heboh hahaha.plus dia udah sejak kecil anterin jie2nya ke skolah, so roughly tau skolah tuh kaya apa, dan pasti bakal dijemput kembali. but glad to see him smiling at the end. gw ntar tgl 28 baru JL msk sekolah (4 yo kinder). dia sih dari skg jg udah ribut kpn msk sekolah. dan pas november kemaren ada sehari utk orientasi, gw sih merasa dia have no problem dilepas. klu JH, i’m yet to find out. msh meraba2 sampe skg karakternya JH spt apa. mirip2 encinya sih.
Ohhh Vai… ampir ngga pernah liat a picture of Vai being upset/almost cry. Hang in there little man!!
He looks so little in that uniform, my heart breaks for him even though I know he will be fine in the long run! Well done for being such a brave Mummy!
Basically, like most kids, Ethan was perfectly fine when I was with him for the first 3 days. He enjoyed the activities and all. But when reality struck on the fourth day, there were definitely tears as we parted. For my child, whenever there are changes that seem negative towards him, he will display displeasure through tantrums at home. Fortunately, he was pretty settled within a month and grew to like his friends and teachers in school. Vai will definitely enjoy school like all do very soon. However, we always need to observe closer if the child still can’t settle after 3 to 4 months. Something could be wrong in school.
ytd was like my little girl’s 8th day at childcare… she’s still crying when we left her… and cried when we fetched her… haiz… heart breaking…
Awww, look at that little face…my challenge will come in a month’s time, yikes!
